Dark Web: Is It A Place To Venture?

Hi everyone! This is my first blog regarding a technical topic, so please pardon me for my mistakes. I hope all of you are doing well during this time of severe pandemic. With an increase in the number of COVID-19 patients worldwide, we are hopeful that there will be an end to it and I'm sure there will be an end to this fatal virus.

We have all heard of the 'Dark Web' at some point in our life and had been sometimes very curious to know and access it. 'Dark Web' has always been seen as the most disturbing place in today's digital world. It is considered that any person in his/her correct sense will never visit the dark web. Also, we have heard of the 'Deep Web' as well. Sometimes it is both confusing and difficult to differentiate them. So, let's get into it without any further delay.

What is the 'Deep Web'?
Deep web refers to something that it not present in the internet but under the surface not hidden completely. We can easily access the deep web and it is rather easy. So, basically we all know about the sites that are specially made for a particular task or work. For example, we need to see our bank account details or need to pay our cable TV operator online, we won't be finding these sites already ready in our web browser when searched. Instead we will enter our account details on the site that is tailor made by the bank or the operator. Therefore when we access our details after entering our credentials that is the deep web actually where we are able to see our entire details. Because these information is stored in the bank's or operator's server, they can't be easily accessed just by searching them in our regular web browser.

Is the 'Deep Web' safe?
The deep web is safe when compared to the dark web. We without even worrying, access our credit card details and check our emails using our credentials. That doesn't mean it is completely safe. Our accounts on the deep web contains so much personal information that criminals might value. So it is always better to use strong, unique combinations regarding our passwords that are hard to guess. You can also use Virtual Private Networks(VPNs) to double up your security. ;) While the deep web is relatively safe, it is always better to practice good and smart internet habits.

What is the 'Dark Web'?
Now it's time for the big question. The dark web is something that is intentionally hidden and is often considered as the subset of the deep web. It requires specific browser to access and our normal search engines like Chrome, MS Edge or Firefox can't get into it. The dark web uses 'The Onion Router' service hidden protocol. The dark web can only be accessed through the Tor browser, which gets its name from its service protocol. This provides complete anonymity to the user as well as the sites on the dark web. Worth mentioning, the sites on the dark web ends with .onion instead of our regular .com, .org or .gov etc.

Is it safe to use the 'Dark Web'?
The dark web works very anonymously. It contains both harmless activities and contents, as well as the criminal ones.
For example, we can find websites that will make an eBook for us exceptionally well or will provide very complex riddles to crack. Also, we may find a forum of people who believe free speech is threatened in their country.
But the dark web is generally known for its dark contents. For instance,
>>Stolen Information - From social account numbers to bank card details and many things like log-in credentials, hacked Netflix accounts and many more are up for sale on the dark web.
>>Illegal Substances - Illegal drugs, toxic chemicals that can cause severe damage are available on the dark web.
>>Disturbing Contents - Things like murderers for hire, human trafficking, body parts, guns for sale and any thing worse we can imagine are on the dark web.
There can be potential threats like viruses, hackers, ransom wares and many other such risks.

In short, it ultimately depends on how you want to use the dark web because there are Law enforcement that constantly keep a track anonymously and you may land up in serious case. It is you who will decide how to surf the dark web and obviously always be smart regarding the sites that you access on the dark web.
Anonymity can have positive effects like freedom of speech and dark web makes this possible easily.

Finally, I would suggest that there's no need to access the dark web during our normal day-to-day activities. If you are too curious like me, ;) then it would be better to take few precautions before accessing the dark web.
